We are heading towards winter and it’s the time of year where you will be wearing your big coat, plus a bobble hat and scarf to keep warm. Even though your pets are covered in fur, they will need a bit of help to keep warm too -especially if they are very young or very old. Also, dogs such as whippets, greyhounds and other dogs with low body fat or thin coats will need help keeping out the cold.

There has been some media coverage about this recently with reports in the Canvey Island Echo, on Countryfile and on the news. As of 26th October 2012 we have not seen any cases at Cherrydown but it is something dog owners need to be aware of, but not to panic about. We advise dog owners to remain vigilant and seek veterinary advice immediately if they suspect their dog has SCI.
If you want to travel abroad with your pet you need to get a Pet Passport as this will help you avoid long quarantine periods when you return. The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is designed to stop the spread of rabies and other diseases while still allowing your pet to travel. From 1st January 2012 all pet cats, dogs and ferrets can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the scheme criteria. Rabbits or rodents that are travelling around the EU do not need one as they are not subject to any requirements with regard to rabies.

The last few months of the year can be quite stressful for pets with Halloween, Bonfire Night, Diwali, Christmas, and New Year all falling in quick succession. Children get more excited, we have more visitors, parties abound and fireworks go off for weeks on end. All of this is great for us, but our pets don’t see it in the same way and can be frightened, become withdrawn and sometimes get lost when they run after hearing a loud sound.
Cherrydown Vets does not recommend any particular boarding kennel or cattery but we do believe it is important that owners choose the right one for their pet. Going away and being separated can be stressful both humans and their pets, so it is important to make the right decision to minimise anxiety. As well as boarding kennels there are also a growing number of pet sitters and once again making the right choice will give you extra peace of mind while away.
All cats and dogs will get worms at some stage in their life and many will be re-infected unless they receive regular worming treatment.
Recently we heard there may have been possible cases of Parvovirus in the area so we thought it would be a good idea to write a blog about the subject so you are all aware of what it is and what you can do should your dog contract the virus.
